Dubuque County Library District is happy to announce that Chromebooks and Wireless Hotspots are now available for checkout to DCLD’s resident cardholders ages 13 and older. Chromebooks and Hotspots are available to check out for one week, with no renewals. These are the only items that continue to accrue overdue fines at a rate of $5 per day. Chromebooks and Hotspots must be returned to the circulation desk of the library where it was checked out, and will not be transferred to another branch for pick up.
Chromebooks are laptops which run Google Chrome’s operating system, rather than Windows, Mac, Linux, etc. To use a Chromebook, you must log in with your Google account, and all documents created or edited are saved to your Google Drive. These laptops are great for web browsing, PDF viewing, word processing, and more. Rather than downloading software, such as Microsoft Word or Adobe PDF reader, all of these functions take place in the Google Suite.
Hotspots are devices that provide wireless internet access where you may not have access otherwise. They can be used anywhere within the United States and can provide access at your home, work, on the road or in a hotel… anywhere you need to access the internet. Hotspots rely on the same network as your cellphone, so as long as you can get a signal through the Hotspot, you can connect your computer, gaming system, tablet, or other device and access the internet.
We’re grateful to the Friends of the Dubuque County Library District for their support of this project. Stop by any of our branches or log in to your library account online to place a hold!
